Gambling in Goa
Goa is the second-smallest state in India, though Goa is where you will find all casinos on the Indian mainland. Goa is a destination for tourists, who enjoy the beautiful beaches of the Goa region. Goa is found along the west-central coast of India. Goa is directly south of Maharashtra state, home to the largest city in India: Mumbai, early known as Bombay.
Western tourists also visit the Basilica of Bom Jesus, one of the largest Christian churches in Asia. Goa was a Portuguese colony for 450 years, which accounts both for the large church and the Latin sounding names of some of the cities.
The Goa region of India is also famous for a form of pop culture: goa trance. Goa trance is a form of electronic music with antecedants in the 1980’s and early 1990’s. Goa Trance emerged around the same time as mainstream trance. Its creators were mainly European electronic music artists who enjoyed the beaches of the Goa region, and put on shows in clubs just off those beaches. Goa trance is generally considered a more underground form of trance music, and it has given way in many ways to the related psy-trance sound.
Goa trance was most popular in the mid-1990’s. Since that time, it is mainly popular in Central and Eastern Europe, where its cousin Psytrance is more popular in the United Kingdom and Holland. Psy trance is psychadelic trance, and both genres owe a lot to the sounds of the Indian subcontinent. For the most part, psytrance is more cyber than goa trance, though the two are quite similar. Goa trance is sometimes referred to simply as Goa or 604, for that number’s clear similarity in shape to the letters GOA.
Visitors to Goa should therefore realize the state of Goa is among the most international of all the regions of India. It is also the one best situated for beach resorts.

India Horse Betting
As a legacy of its time as a British colony, Indians love horse racing. Pari-mutuel wagers and horsetrack racing were brought to India in the time of the British Raj, likely as late in the period as 1935. In that year, someone called the Keeper of the Indian Stud Book is found registering thoroughbreds. Indians appear to love racing stallions.
The chief horsetracks where horse betting is allowed are Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Mysore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata, i.e. Calcutta.

India is the world’s most populous democracy, with over a billion citizens. India is also the world’s 13th largest economy and the world’s 7th largest amount of land, and currently has the second fastest-growing economy. India is also the birthplace of four major religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. India has been touched and influenced by several of the other major world relgions, including Islam and Christianity.
India’s civilization has existed since 3,000 B.C., though a distinctly Indian Hindu culture has existed since around 500 B.C. India is called a sub-continent, because it has been largely separated from the rest of Asia by the Himalayan mountain range for most of its history. A patchwork of kingdoms grew up in what is present-day India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka, all of which are considered part of the subcontinent.
From the Mamluk conquest in 1206 until the fall of the Mughals in the generations after the decisive Battle of Karnal in 1736, Muslims ruled most of Northern India from the city of Delhi. The Muslim rulers added contributed much to the history and culture of India, and some of the Muslem rulers so fascinated with India were men like Tamerlane, Babur and Akbar. It was one Muslim ruler, Shah Jahan, who built the Taj Mahal.
The British came to India in the early 18th century, and it was they who began to erode the power of the Mughals. The British East India Company became a state within a state, annexing smaller Indian kingdoms to the British crown as they went along. Their East India Company would annex lands when no direct male heir existed. Later, even this pretext was dispensed with.
The growing power of the British led to the so-called Indian Mutiny of 1857, which was really more of a mass uprising of the Indian people. Both Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs feared the Christian power would try to erase their culture and religion, a perception increased by the influx of Christian missionaries and an increasingly aggressive East India Company.
The Mutiny led to the British seizing Delhi and deposing the last Mughal emperor, a man put forth by both Hindu and Muslim princes as their champion. In the wake of the mutiny, the British Empire ended the reign of the East India Company and instituted the British Raj, or reign. Less corrupt British officials would rule India for the next ninety years, until Indian independence in 1947.
In the latter part of the British period, Gandhi began a non-violent independence movement. Most British imperialists considered India the lynchpin to the entire empire, though, and were unwilling to let the subcontinent go until the bankruptcy that followed World War II. Many loyal Indian troops fought with distinction for the British Empire in both world wars.
After independence, the Muslim regions of India wanted their own independence from the Hindu majority. This led to the creation of Pakistan, which remains the blood enemy of national India. Pakistan and India have had four wars, in 1947, 1965, 1971 and 1999. These wars have often centered around control of the province of Kashmir.
India also fought a war against Communist China in 1962, also over border disputes. Relations between China and India had been cordial until 1959, when India accepted fleeing Tibetan leader, the Dalai Lama, to escape Chinese forces into India. Border tensions continued from 1959 until 1962, when these tensions erupted into war.
China seems to have chosen the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis to escalate the conflict, as both the Soviet Union and the United States were Indian patrons in those days. After weeks of intense battles, the Chinese controlled the disputed regions. Threats of U.S. Air Force raids on Chinese troops may have caused the Chinese to unilaterally declare an end to the war.
The Indians began to vigorously modernize their military in the wake of their loss in the war, and they were aided by the Soviets and the Americans in doing so. India now has the 3rd largest army in the world. In its successive wars against Pakistan, India has gained the upper hand. In fact, the 1971 war led to the creation of Bangladesh from the territories of East Pakistan.
These days, India is a rising economic power. As India’s economy grows, you can expect more casinos, lottery games and racetracks to be built around India, especially along the western coast of India.
