Venezuelan History

Venezuela gained its independence in 1821, which made it part of the last wave of South American nations to declare independence from Spain. Simon Bolivar was one of a number of leaders who led the war of independence.

Much of the 19th century and early 20th century saw the Venezuelans ruled by caudillos, which was the term for the local military strongmen. This rule was thrown off in the 1930’s, though the military still maintained an influence in Venezuelan politics into the fifties.

Venezuela is one of the wealthiest South American countries, due to the oil deposits found in Venezuela in the 1910’s. The Venezuelan GDP was the highest on the continent, though the oil bust of the eighties left Venezuela’s economy in trouble. This led to a new round of political instability. Hugo Chavez led an abortive attempt to overthrow the govenment in 1992.

Seven years later, Chavez won elected to the role of Venezuelan president. He would be replaced for a time by a right-wing coup in 2002, but resumed his office in recent years. Venezuela’s economy has grown with the new rise in oil prices and Chavez claims much of the credit. Hugo Chavez has tried to become the leader of an anti-American movement in South America, though it is uncertain how effective this movement will be.

Venezuela has long-standing territorial disputes with its neighbors, including Guyana and Columbia.
